Experience Report

This course had a set of objectives, which included the following:

  • Connect classrooms discussion to real-world application

  • Identify career possibilities available in various communication fields

  • Demonstrate improved strategic skills in research, relationship development application of knowledge and creative problem solving

  • Receive first hand experience in applying PR skills and techniques you have studied at UVU

These objectives were reached over this learning experience. Some examples of application are:

  • Connect classrooms discussion to real-world application:

While in the workshops, I heard a number of points from these skilled and honored professionals that I have already heard from my beloved PR professors at UVU.  For instance, in one workshop it was mentioned that a great way to retain relationships and show appreciation to people is to always use hand written thank you cards instead of email or other forms or nothing at all. This concept, I first learned from Stephen Whyte in his Introduction to Public Relations course that I took almost two years ago. This was just one of the many things that I had déjà vu about from my UVU PR courses over this trip.

  • Identify career possibilities available in various communication fields:

Before attending this conference, I was very unsure and worried about what I would do after I graduated from UVU. This trip settled my fears by showing me all the possibilities and opportunities I have with this degree. It also helped me to narrow my options down to what I feel is right for me. I discovered that Fashion PR is not for me. I also met a number of professionals that got where they are from many different outlets. The CEO of Strahan and Associates started his career in the military. Others started as bloggers and journalists. Many people start out at firms. Because of this trip I have decided that I want to start out at a firm so I can get experience with a number of different types of clients as well as have opportunities to network people in many different industries.

  • Demonstrate improved strategic skills in research, relationship development, application of knowledge and creative problem solving:

As mentioned in the explanation for the first objective, I had relationship development skills that I has previously learned (thank you cards) reaffirmed at this conference. Also, as far as relationship building skills, I learned a number of things about networking and branding yourself so that you build the relationship that you want to build with specific people and create an image of yourself to improve the relationship. Also I learned about problem solving in a workshop called media training and how to handle problems within an organization and communicating with the media.

  • Receive first hand experience in applying PR skills and techniques you have studied at UVU

As a part of this experience, we wrote thank you cards to people we met and people that helped us get there, which we have learned from Stephen and from presenters at the conference. Also, I was able to apply my networking skills, research (displayed in questions and understanding of concepts in workshops) and design abilities (displayed in business cards and resumes). I was also able to meet other students and network with them and have educated conversation about topics and understanding in the industry.
